Howe Park Shooting Results in 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Officials in Sacramento County are investigating a violent incident that unfolded Saturday evening at Howe Park just as Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dissolving a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.

Background

Deputies were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after learning of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. After that, another report was received mentioning a possible physical fight happening at the location.

Air support searched from above but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Despite this, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.

The Moment Gunfire Erupted

Deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by surrounding the park and making announcements ordering those gathered to disperse at once. Nearly 15 minutes were allotted for attendees to disperse.

As the crowd was being cleared that upwards of 20 gunshots cut through the air. The rapid succession of shots caused mass panic. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began locating gunshot victims.

Those Who Were Hit

Altogether, four shooting victims were found to have been shot. All four — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their 20s — were transported to area medical facilities. Doctors and nurses noted that two were treated for serious injuries, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one person's injuries were considered minor. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were called to the scene and aided in treating the injured on location.

Evidence at the Scene

Most of the gunfire seemed to have taken place on Cottage Way next to the Home Depot located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators discovered additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were observed in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the Home Depot. The physical evidence confirmed that a second shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot store. The store itself was temporarily locked down during the incident. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives check here worked tirelessly late into the evening.

Detainees in Solano County

Information relayed through law enforcement radio communications indicated that a Kia vehicle had been stopped in Solano County California. Four people were stopped and detained. Law enforcement units were heading to pick up the four detainees to bring the suspects back for further questioning. Video evidence established that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
